Fats are my favourite Macro-nutrients ;)

Are you scared of eating FATS? Whhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

That long why, with extra y's states that how disappointed I am that people are actually scared of Fats.

I just love eating Good Fats.

Yes. Your read that right. Over the years we have learnt and heard and read a lot about Fats. However this article will change your views about Fats forever. I complete maximum of my daily calorie intake with Fats in a majority. Fats range from 40-60 percent of my daily intake of calories.

Now, we need to learn to segregate good fats from the bad fats.

You can see the difference here ;)

Every gram of Fats provide you with 9kcal which is more than double that of which is provide by Carbohydrates and Proteins i.e. 4kcal form every gram.

So, we take this the negative way that they add onto extra calories but in fact what we should perceive them is that we have to eat half of the other food items rich in good fats to meet our daily requirements.

Foods that are rich in Fat content are:

  • Ghee, Butter, Oils like mustard, olive, coconut.
  • Milk and other dairy items like cheese, curd, butter milk.
  • Avocados, Almonds, flax seeds and chia seeds.
  • Cottage cheese (paneer), Chicken, Red meat.

They can be further categorised into:

Saturated Fats: Good for your health and stable.

Ghee, butter, chicken, meat, paneer and whey.

Monounsaturated Fats: (MUFA’s) partly stable and again good sources of fats.

Olives, palm oil, peanut butter, Nuts (almonds, peanuts, macadamia, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews).

Polyunsaturated: (PUFA’s) highly unstable and not good sources of fats.

Soybean and safflower oils, sunflower and sesame seeds, Tofu.

Trans Fats: Generally considered as the bad fats and one should avoid this. However, this is what we consume the most on a daily basis.

Packaged foods like cookies, biscuits, muffins, cakes etc.

Chips and fried food items.

And then anything that has vegetable oil and packed for 6 months.

You know what, once in a while I bring in this Fresh cream small pack, add some whey, almonds, some oil and Voila!!

As mentioned in my earlier articles, we do not have to cut down on our calorie intake in order to lose weight, what we have to put our focus on is cutting down excess fat from our body. Now, this would be weird but I am sure you will be intrigued when I say in order to lose fat from our bodies we must increase the intake of Fats in our bodies. ;)

Yes you read that right.

The 3 macro-nutrients: Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats sums up the total calorie intake. We have to cut down on carbs and instead increase the fats content. However, we are still not going down with our calories. How?

Let us cut down 1 chappati/roti from the lunch which is approx. 20gms i.e. 80kcal.
Add 1 tbsp. Ghee to the other chappati/roti which will add approx. 100-135 kcal.
You see what we did there? Calorie intake will increase, you will get full sooner and with good fats instead of carbs. Our mother’s and grandmother’s always gave us these rotis with lots of ghee in it and as we grow up, read something on the internet, we choose to run away from ghee/butter. Why?

Do we doubt our mother or simply follow the internet blindly?

We are way too late and slow in learning and accepting things. Check the below pictue which explains how the term was searched on google way back in 2004 and we still haven't got any clue whatsoever.

The west side countries or the developed nations have always been ahead of us. They still are when we compare obesity with them ;)

However, the eating habits cannot be compared but we can still choose to learn and never stop or fear any kind of change. It's been years now that we have been taught that Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy. No. They are one of the sources of energy because even Proteins and Fats give us energy.

Stop fearing Fats and start loving them and see the difference for yourself. Now, the next time you go on a diet please do not cut ghee/butter from your diet remove the thing which you eat these items with. For example bread.

Stay motivated. Stay hydrated. Eat a lot of Good Fats.

Have a good day :)
